What is SEND?

SEND stands for Special Education Needs and Disabilities.

In any classroom, children learn at different speeds and in different ways. Teachers will plan their lessons and choose different types of lesson materials to help each child learn best.

Children with SEND might need more help than this.

Some children may have difficulties with:

  • concentrating skills
  • ability to understand things
  • physical ability to do things such as writing
  • reading and writing, for example due to dyslexia
  • behaviour or ability to socialise, for example struggling to make friends

A child who needs extra help in any of these areas may have special educational needs (SEN) and require extra support.

Who else could have Special Educational Needs?

  • Some children may have SEN because of a medical condition or disability
  • Some children may have a medical condition or disability but not have SEN
  • Children may have SEN without a diagnosis

SEN support at school

Every school must have a  Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo). It is the SENCo that is responsible for making sure that those pupils that require extra support in school, receive it.

If you are concerned your child has or may have SEND you can request a meeting with the Class Teacher and the SENCo.
