Choosing a school without an EHCP
Support to choose a school place
This information is for parents and carers of children and young people with special educational needs (SEN) who do not have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Applying for a school place
If your child has SEN but does not have an EHCP, you apply for a school place using the standard admissions process, either through your local authority or directly with the school, depending on the type of school.
You can express a preference for:
- a mainstream school
- an academy or free school
- a faith school
Your child will be considered under the school’s admissions criteria. Schools must not refuse admission solely because a child has SEN.
SEN Support in school
Children with SEN who do not have an EHCP should receive SEN Support in school. This is part of the graduated approach described in the SEND Code of Practice.

SEN Support may include:
- adjustments to teaching
- support from staff
- targeted interventions
- help with emotional or social needs
Schools are expected to:
- identify and assess your child’s needs
- plan and deliver support
- review progress regularly, involving you in the process.
Finding out what support a school offers
Before choosing a school, you may wish to:
- read the school’s SEN Information Report (available on their website)
- look at your local authority’s Local Offer
- contact the school’s SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator)
- visit the school and ask questions about how they support children with SEN
- review the school’s most recent Ofsted report, which may include comments on inclusion and support for pupils with additional needs
This can help you understand how the school might meet your child’s needs.
